iTEP Tapped by Ecuadorian Government to test 6,500 English Teachers

Over three days this November-December, 5,721 English teachers selected by Ecuador‘s Ministry of Education for English proficiency evaluation were administered iTEP. At one point, 1,235 teachers were taking iTEP simultaneously at 98 test sites across 24 provinces of Ecuador. iTEP was selected for the initiative, which will test over 6,500 teachers in total, by INEVAL (National Institute for Educational Evaluation), a governmental entity in charge of promoting the excellence in the Ecuadorian education system through impartial assessments of instructors.

“Maintaining high levels of English proficiency of English teachers is an key issue for educational institutions throughout the world,” says iTEP Chairman Perry Akins. “We applaud INEVAL for ensuring that the English teachers of Ecuador are sufficiently qualified, and are thrilled that iTEP was selected for this initiative. Our iTEP Ecuador team as well as our US-based staff did a fantastic job with this undertaking.”

iTEP Ecuador, the local distributor of iTEP, was instrumental in planning and executing the large number of tests in a short time period. The iTEP Ecuador team worked with INEVAL and the Ministry of Education to put in place processes, protocols and trainings to ensure that test proctors and technology met iTEP International’s standards and would produce reliable and accurate test results. They also created custom tools to distribute reports rapidly. “We had a helpdesk who were able to support the proctors and solve problems during the administration of the tests, which is a good strategy to ensure success on projects like this one,” says Mariadelaida Uribe de Plaza of iTEP Ecuador. “Governments, countries and large educational institutions can look to this project as an example of how streamlined a large-scale testing initiative like this can be.”

“This project in Ecuador is opening doors for iTEP to continue to grow in the Spanish-speaking market,” says Akins. “This was a perfect example of iTEP being used to its fullest extent, not just as an assessment, but as a tool on which to base public policies to improve the English level of teachers and students.”

Top Brazilian University Accepts iTEP for Grad Programs

The University of São Paulo is a top 5 university in Brazil with a rich history and a high level of prestige in the country. Two USP graduate programs now accept iTEP scores for proof of English proficiency for admissions: The Drugs and Medicines Post-Graduation Program, and Professional Master Program in Civil Engineering.

Cátia Kajihara, executive director of iTEP’s Brazilian distributor, MK Consultoria em Idiomas, says these USP programs were attracted to iTEP’s ease of use and flexibility. “They like it is an international test available on demand, and that iTEP offers students a lower price,” she says. “They also like the detailed score reports and quick-turnaround for scoring.” iTEP is scheduled on demand at more than 700 test centers around the world–including two in the city of São Paulo.

“It’s an honor for iTEP to be accepted at what is essentially an Ivy League school in Brazil,” says iTEP International President Jemal Idris. “We set out to create a world-class, top-of-the-line English assessment tool, and we consider it a major success when institutions of this caliber join our growing list of partner schools around the world.” iTEP is accepted by over 800 institutions globally.

The Drugs and Medicines Post-Graduation Program of USP is part of the School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, which was founded in 1898. The undergraduate course has approximately 950 students and the graduate programs have around 500 students.

The Professional Master Program in Civil Engineering is part of the Escola Politécnica da Universidade de São Paulo (Polytechnic School of University of São Paulo), also known as POLI-USP. Founded in 1893, POLI-USP was the first engineering school in the state of São Paulo. USP was founded in 1934 and incorporated POLI in the same year.

“POLI-USP has great importance in the scientific and academic fields in Brazil,” says Kajihara. “Its graduates have occupied prominent positions in public service and industry, including mayors and governors of São Paulo.” POLI has 4500 undergraduate students and 2500 graduate students.

ACEI and iTEP International launch initiative to help refugees get education, jobs

The Welcome Project is a joint endeavor by the Academic Credentials Evaluation Institute, Inc. (ACEI) and iTEP International, offering individuals classified as refugees assistance with the verification and evaluation of their international academic credentials for U.S. educational equivalence and determining their language proficiency through an approved language assessment test.

According to the UN Refugee Agency, as of 2017, there are more than 68 million people who have been displaced because of war, violence and persecution. In an effort to serve this displaced population already in the U.S., The Welcome Project© combines ACEI’s international credential verification and evaluation with iTEP’s English language proficiency test.

“As an international credential evaluation service provider, we see it as our responsibility and moral imperative to do our part to support the integration of refugees, where possible, by offering our expertise in this field, at the onset of their resettlement in the U.S.,” says Jasmin Saidi-Kuehnert, President & CEO of ACEI. “By partnering with iTEP International through The Welcome Project©, we are able to combine our evaluation and English  language proficiency test capabilities at specially reduced fees to make it affordable and amenable to institutional and organizational clients.”

“We feel that through our combined expertise, individuals displaced by war and persecution will be able to receive recognition of their education achievements and language competency,” says Dan Lesho, Executive Vice-President of iTEP International. “This recognition will enable them to integrate into their new adopted community much faster as they set out to further their studies or qualify for jobs.”

The Welcome Project© is made available to U.S. schools, colleges and universities, and employers who wish to provide these vulnerable and displaced individuals access to education and employment by ensuring they meet academic and English language proficiency requirements.

From left to right: U.S. Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross, iTEP International CEO Sharif Ossayran, iTEP International President Jemal Idris

U.S. Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross presented iTEP International with the President’s “E” Award for Exports at a ceremony in Washington, D.C., on May 21. The President’s “E” Award is the highest recognition any U.S. entity can receive for making a significant contribution to the expansion of U.S. exports.

“iTEP International has demonstrated a sustained commitment to export expansion,” said Secretary Ross in his congratulatory letter to the company announcing its selection. “The ‘E’ Award Committee was very impressed with iTEP International’s innovative marketing and sales strategies customized to individual markets. The company’s use of partnerships to develop sales in 51 countries was also particularly notable. iTEP International’s achievements have undoubtedly contributed to national export expansion efforts that support the U.S. economy and create American jobs.”

iTEP International is the creator of the International Test of English Proficiency (iTEP) suite of internet-based language assessment tools. iTEP exams are used by educational institutions, companies, and governments across 50 countries for admissions, placement, hiring, and progress tracking of non-native English speakers.

“Since launching in 2008, iTEP has continually sought to expand what an English assessment tool allows for by creating a better user experience and richer data set,” says iTEP International President Jemal Idris. “In doing so, we have expanded the market for English assessment tools as a whole, and we are honored to receive the “E” Award as a result of this work.”

While many education entities have been honored over the years, iTEP International is the first English assessment company to receive the President’s “E” Award since it was established in 1961 by President Kennedy. In total, Secretary Ross honored 43 U.S. companies and organizations from across the country with the President’s “E” Award for their role in strengthening the U.S. economy by sharing American ingenuity outside of our borders.

The award is based on four years of successive export growth in one or more international markets. iTEP International’s largest international market is China with more than 100 test centers and partnerships with some of the largest educational organizations in the country. Other key markets for iTEP include Mexico, Colombia, Japan, and South Korea.

U.S. exports totaled $2.33 trillion in 2017, accounting for 12 percent of U.S. gross domestic product. Exports supported an estimated 10.7 million jobs nationwide in 2016, according to the most recent statistics from the International Trade Administration.

iTEP Now a Major Player in Japan

In response to a national push to increase spoken English proficiency among Japanese students, Kawai Juku, one of the largest education companies in the country, will offer a new English assessment test entirely adapted from iTEP to its network of more than 3 million high school students. The partnership constitutes the most wide scale assessment of English speaking skills of students ever undertaken in Japan.

The new test, called KJET-S, uses content exclusively from iTEP Conversation, a 30-minute test designed to have a friendly tone in order to get an accurate picture of a test-taker’s spoken English ability in day-to-day conversation. Students will use the test to measure their spoken English progress and identify skill areas that need improvement in preparation for Japan’s new conversational English requirement for college admissions going into effect in 2020.

Kawai Juku expects to administer some 220,000 KJET-S tests over the next 4-5 years. “The strength of the iTEP suite of English assessment tools is their adaptability,” says Hiroshi Kagawa, Chair of IBC Publishing. “We can modify iTEP exams to meet market demands and client needs. This unique aspect of iTEP’s offerings is what enabled the creation of Kawai’s new KJET-S test, which fills a major need in the prep school market.”

“iTEP Conversation was created to enable institutions use English assessment tools in new and exciting ways,” says iTEP President Jemal Idris. “We are extremely excited to be playing such a key role in the national initiative to improve spoken English skills.”

“Spoken English is no longer just a good skill to have. It is now a requirement for incoming university students in Japan,” says Mr. Wada, Chair of Kawai Publishing. “Yet, this skill has not been widely measured, largely because doing so was logistically difficult and cost prohibitive. The introduction of KJET changes the game.”

About Kawai Juku

Established in 1933, Kawai Juku is one of the leading private-sector educational organizations in Japan. The company owns 413 prep schools throughout Japan where more than 110,000 students prepare for college entrance exams. In addition, Kawai Juku is a provider of educational materials and test for public high schools and prep schools in Japan with a total accumulated reach of more than 3 million students per a year.

iTEP Enters South Korean Market

The iTEP suite of English assessment tools is now available in South Korea for the first time. iTEP International kicked off 2018 by entering into a partnership with The HALF Corporation of South Korea to bring its English proficiency tests to educational institutions, private companies and government agencies throughout the country.

“The English assessment market in South Korea has been stagnant for decades,” says Half Corporation CEO Kim Koon Kim. “The introduction of iTEP is a badly needed breath of fresh air, and we are thrilled to be the organization bringing more user-friendly and convenient English testing to South Korea.”

Established in 1998, HALF is the developer of a unique and very popular language self-study method known as “HALF Study Amgibang.”  This year, the company is launching a Virtual English Class in which learners will meet and interact with English-speaking digital characters while building pronunciation and other skills.

“HALF Corporation is an extremely forward-thinking company that is on the leading edge of education technology in South Korea,” says iTEP President Jemal Idris. “We share a vision of language acquisition and assessment that is technology driven.”

iTEP will both seek to capture market share from longstanding English testing players as well as expand the English assessment market in South Korea. The testing provider will target institutions and test-takers priced out by the existing providers or who find their platforms not flexible, detailed, or efficient enough for their needs.
